Barringer Crater 1

Amazing what a little mass mixed with high velocity (around 30,000 MPH) will do to our little planet. This meteor crater is about 4,000 feet in diameter and about 570 feet deep, and was caused by a nickel-iron meteorite that is thought to have been around 150 feet across. It is speculated that all life within a radius of around 2 miles from the impact site would have been killed immediately by an explosion that was 150 times more powerful than the atomic bombs used in Japan during World War II. Now stand back in awe of the powerful forces of the Universe.

Taken while on a cross-country trip from California to the Midwest; specifically at the Arizona/New Mexico border. It's rather wondrous how a behemoth cliff-side simply overshadows anything lying at its feet.

Hollywood 2

Here's another view of the Hollywood sign. Hollywood to me is a world of chaos and high-energy, and so I decided to set it against a tranquil and serene body of water...adding a bit of irony to the image.

I figured to mark the beginning of my L.A. series there was no better photo than a Hollywood photo. So here it is. I tried to approach it a little differently than most Hollywood sign photos, in composition and in toning. Using a "silver gel" type toning, I tried to create what I see in my mind when I think of Hollywood and the big Silver Screen. Be sure to come back and check out the rest of this L.A. series, including one of Madonna's old house being overshadowed by the Hollywood sign...among others.

This is a repost of this image. I didn't think that lower resolution post from 12-03-2006 did this photo justice...so I am reposting in higher res and larger size. Suck up all those extra pixels and enjoy ;)

Taken in Anguilla in the Caribbean on the same day as the Heineken Regatta. It was getting close to sunset and we decided to dock at the beach and enjoy the last minutes of light from the sand.

Flowing Sails

I thought I would post something different today. This is from an original photograph I took during the Heineken Regatta in Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles. When I first saw these sails the first word that came to mind was "flowing." So I took some artistic liberty and made this photo reflect that word by making it more "paint-like" and thus producing a more flowing visual depicted by the flowing lines throughout. If you would like for me to post the original photograph, just let me know in the comments and I'll be happy to do so. Hope you enjoy.

Bleeding Rust

I found the color so vibrant and beautiful from the rust bleeding into the wood...that I just had to photograph it. I found this in the lagoon (in Sint Maarten, Netherlands Antilles) laying on some rocks. It must have washed up there during high tide. Now I'm not quite sure where it came from, but it could possibly still be a remnant from Hurricane Luis that hit Sint Maarten in 1995 and destroyed everything. Here's a link to a YouTube video about Hurricane Luis: YouTube LinkAll over the island you still see abandoned apartment complexes, large resorts, sailboats, and even a casino that is now 1 foot deep in mud...with chips laying all over the place and mixed in with the mud. It has been so forgotten that the local habitation is taking over it, with plants growing inside the casino within the mud and all up the walls. I even saw a roulette table. Oh, I got some souvenirs that day I went to check it out ;) ...unfortunately not the roulette table as it was so heavy and buried within the mud that I couldn't even budge it with all my strength.
