Tacking is the act of changing the course or direction of a vessel. For sailboats, the sail suddenly flips to the opposite side and can be a very dangerous maneuver. If you can imagine the force which the sail carries, especially on a windy day, then you can appreciate the power behind it and thus the danger if you are in its way. You won't win!
Here you can also see just how much the boat was leaning, with its edge almost in the water as the power of the sail propelled us along. This was no small vessel either...a 74 footer! I am still in awe of the raw power some wind and a sail can produce.
