I have always wondered why the mailbox looks the way it looks, with its distinguishable rounded top and slender but deep profile. All across the U.S. most mailboxes that I've seen look exactly like this one, or if not exactly like it then a very similar design. I would even venture to say that this little box has become part of American culture, for almost any American would recognize its shape and in some way could associate with it (even without the markings "U.S. Mail Approved by the Postmaster General").
